Social Services Thanksgiving Holiday Operations

The District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administration Board would like to advise residents of schedule changes for the Thanksgiving statutory holiday.
The following Social Services facilities will be closed to the public on Monday, October 10th:
• Ontario Works
• Social Housing
• Community Child Care
• Administration Offices

Sault Ste. Marie Housing and Homelessness Plan Update

The District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administration Board is responsible for administering a range of provincially legislated affordable housing, social housing and homelessness programs and services.  The 10 year Housing and Homelessness Plan aims to address affordable housing and homelessness throughout the complete housing continuum; including homelessness prevention, emergency shelters, transitional housing, supportive housing and affordable rental and/or home ownership.

The Investment in Affordable Housing for Ontario Program

The District of Sault Ste. Marie DSSAB in co-operation with the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario is pleased to make available

     The Investment in Affordable Housing for Ontario Program

The Ontario Renovates Component of the Investment in Affordable Housing for Ontario Program is designed to provide assistance to qualifying homeowners with the cost of eligible repairs to their homes.

On behalf of the District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administration Board, we would like to thank you for your interest in applying to the Investment in Affordable Housing for Ontario Program's Ontario Renovates ComponentWe have currently reached the maximum number of homeowners we can assist with our allotted federal/provincial dollars.  Your application will be waitlisted chronologically.  As more funds become available, we will attempt to assist all applicants.

Find Rental



Social Housing is rent geared to income housing. It is available to all citizens living in Ontario. The amount of rent you pay is based on your total family income (gross). Your rent in social housing will not be more than 30% of your total income.

Social Housing Units are available in many neighbourhoods throughout the City of Sault Ste. Marie. They include:

       · bachelor apartments
       · One, Two and Three Bedroom apartments
       · townhouses
       · semi detached
       · duplexes and
       · single family homes

There are units designated for senior citizens and there are modified units for persons with disabilities.

Individuals and families who do not require subsidized housing and are interested in units in any of these buildings, can apply directly to each Social Housing Provider.



Anyone can apply for Social Housing however, not everyone will be eligible.  There are a number of factors that will determine if you can get subsidized housing. Click Here to find out more link to Applying for Social Housing.


Individuals and families who do not require subsidized housing must apply directly with each Housing Provider.


Tenants are individuals and families who are currently living in a subsidized housing unit. As tenants you have rights and responsibilities as does your Housing provider. For more information on tenant services with the various Housing providers Click Here.
